The Expendable Reader, front cover

Throughout the book, images from original source material of McHale’s writing are traced and enlarged, and then placed directly on top of text in the reader with a high-contrast photo-overlay effect, rendering the text white where the image is black. The images act as dynamic visual footnotes to what is being read.
The book is typeset in custom version of Times Seven. At the end of each chapter, the original source images are reproduced with long captions, typeset in Folio Medium.
